Short-term effects of nitrogen enrichment, litter removal and cutting on a Mediterranean grassland

چکیده
Semi-natural grassland communities are of great interest in conservation because of their high species richness. These communities are being threatened by both land abandonment and nitrogen eutrophication, and their continued existence will depend upon correct management. However, there is a distinct lack of studies of the ecological mechanisms that regulate species diversity and productivity in Mediterranean grasslands. We have conducted a 3-year field experiment in a species-poor grassland in central Italy to investigate the effects of nitrogen fertilization coupled with removal of plant litter and artificial cutting on species diversity and community productivity. Vegetation cutting reduced living biomass but increased species diversity. In fact, cutting had positive effects on the cover of almost all of the annual and biennial species, while it had a negative effect on the dominant perennial grasses Brachypodium rupestre and Dactylis glomerata. Litter removal had similar effects to cutting, although it was far less effective in increasing species diversity. In contrast, nitrogen enrichment strongly increased the living biomass while maintaining very low species diversity. Our results have indicated that seminatural Mediterranean grasslands need specific management regimes for maintenance and restoration of species diversity. In the management of these grasslands, attention should be paid to the potential threat from nitrogen enrichment, especially when coupled with land abandonment. © 2006 Elsevier Masson SAS. Effects of nitrogen enrichment, plant litter removal and cutting on a species-rich Mediterranean calcareous grassland
Semi-natural calcareous grasslands are of great interest in conservation because of their high species richness, but presently they are threatened by both land abandonment and nitrogen eutrophication. The paper reports on a three-year field experiment conducted in a species-rich Mediterranean grassland to study the effects of nitrogen application coupled with removal of plant litter and artific...
متن کاملInfluence of Different Culture Selection Methods on Polyhydroxyalkanoate Production at Short-term Biomass Enrichment
In this study, the potential of four different culture selection methods under short-term enrichment time (STE) to accumulate PHA-producing bacteria in mixed activated sludge was compared and the most efficient culture selection method was introduced. This means, PHA-producing microbial community was firstly enriched in a sequencing batch bioreactor (SBR) with four different selection methods i...
متن کاملRecovery of plant diversity following N cessation: effects of recruitment, litter, and elevated N cycling.
Plant species richness has declined and composition shifted in response to elevated atmospheric deposition of biologically active nitrogen over much of the industrialized world. Litter thickness, litter nitrogen (N) content, and soil N mineralization rates often remain elevated long after inputs cease, clouding the prospects that plant community diversity and composition would recover should N ...
متن کاملEffects of Foliage Removal and Using Different Nitrogen Rates on Remobilization of Pre-anthesis Assimilates to the Grain in a Dual-purpose (Forage and Grain) Barley
In order to study the source limitation and contribution of pre-anthesis assimilates to grain in dual-purpose (forage and grain) barley, a field experiment was carried out in Iran, Ahvaz region. The experimental design was split plot in randomized complete block with three replications. Application rates of nitrogen at four levels (60, 120, 180 and 220 kg.ha-1 N) were as main plots, while sub p...
متن کاملQuantum Dots Reveal Shifts in Organic Nitrogen Uptake by Fungi Exposed to Long-Term Nitrogen Enrichment
Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) enrichment can alter N dynamics associated with decomposing plant litter. However, it is unclear to what extent these alterations occur via microbial effects (e.g., changes in gene regulation, physiology, or community composition) versus plant litter effects (e.g., changes in composition of N and C compounds). To isolate microbial effects from plant litter effects, we...
